Faithful Friend is a Secondary Quest in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. Secondary Quests are optional Quests not required to finish the game. Some of these quests may have a bearing on certain Main Quests or may be a consequence of another Quest.
Faithful Friend can only be obtained during the quest Something Ends, Something Begins at the end of the game. Upon leaving the tavern, Geralt will witness a runaway horse, thus beginning the quest.
Some time after he reunited with Yennefer in White Orchard, Geralt returned to that village. During his previous visit, he had hunted a griffin. This time, his task was to catch a runaway horse.

After the quest Something Ends, Something Begins, you will leave the tavern and witness a horse rearing and throwing a peasant off its back before running away. Now chase the horse or follow its tracks across the bridge, you can also hop on the horse if you are fast enough, you won't be able to control the horse except for making it run faster. It will then lead you to a Temerian Soldier. It turns out that soldier you encounter is the real owner of the runaway horse, and once reunited, the quest is completed.
You can then ask the soldier about his exploits during the war, he will also reveal the name of his horse, Gulden. He explains how he left his horse to his friend named Mirko, the peasant who was thrown off the back of the horse that you saw at the beginning.
If you try to follow him after the quest ends, you will see him talking to Mirko and understand why the horse started running away.

How much do the Horses cost in Witcher 3?
- In Witcher 3, you cannot buy a new horse, but you can get a new one if your current horse dies. You can steal horses from other people but you cannot take possession of them as long as your current horse is still alive. You can also tame wild horses using Axii.
