The Vegelbud family's out-of-town estate was famed not only for its lovely guardians and sumptuous banquets, but also for the series of horse races organized there in honor of one of the line's illustrious ancestors, Erasmus. Geralt, who had spent a great many years in the saddle, decided to test his mettle in this derby - lured, perhaps, by the sizable reward promised to the victor.

After starting the quest, head out to the Vegelbud Residence and look for the race master, you will have to pay him 100 Crowns to enter the race. You can also talk to him to learn more about the history of races if you wish to do so. All races have different routes and are quite long so you'll have to keep an eye on Roach's stamina, and for each race, you'll have to pay 100 Crowns as an entry fee.
For the first two races, you will earn 10 XP immediately after you pay the entry fee, then another 10 XP and 160 Crowns. You will also receive the Superior Racing Saddle from the first win and the Rugged Saddlebags for the second win.
For the third race, you will race against Luc Vegelbud. The weather will always be rainy once you start the third race and you'll have to make sure to follow the set path, you might get confused as there's a split in one of the paths and if you went the wrong way, the path is blocked there and you'll have to make your way back and go the other way, wasting precious time and your mount's stamina. Once you defeat Luc, you'll receive 25 XP and 200 Crowns along with the Superior Cavalry Saddle. You will also receive an additional 75 XP and 80 Crowns for completing the final race.
Head downstairs and one of Cleaver's men will congratulate you and give you a message. After reading the message, head back to Novigrad and talk to the gang leader, he will ask you to enter the Palio race as his entry. Do note that once you agree, it'll automatically start the next race, so make sure you're ready once you accept this.
For this one, you'll be racing across Grassy Knoll and then back to the starting point. If you lose this race, you won't get any rewards and Cleaver will be annoyed. If you win, you'll receive 700 Crowns on top of your race winnings, the Racing Horse Blinders, and 40 Crowns. Cleaver will also be delighted. Regardless of whether you won the race or not, the group will be interrupted by the temple guard, and the quest will conclude here.
