Bitter Harvest is a Secondary Quest in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. Secondary Quests are optional Quests not required to finish the game. Some of these quests may have a bearing on certain Main Quests or may be a consequence of another Quest.
Bitter Harvest can be obtained by by speaking to Albin Hart marked with a yellow exclamation mark south-east of the Border Post in Velen. He asks for protection from necrophages while he and his men scavenge the battlefield for loot.
The Nilfgaardian and Redanian forces had fought many bloody yet indecisive battles in Velen from which both sides had to retreat without collecting their dead. On one such field Geralt encountered a group of looters robbing the corpses of the fallen. In another time and place he might have merely grit his teeth and continued on his way. Yet conditions in Velen were harsh and other sources of sustenance few - so he decided to swallow his revulsion and defend these desperate men from the monsters stalking the battlefield.

Walkthrough for The Witcher 3 Bitter Harvest
Once you reach the area, speak to Albin Hart, he will ask you to defend him and his men from Monsters, they seem to be drawn to the battlefield by the stench of the dead bodies. Once you accept the quest, waves of monsters will start appearing on the battlefield.
You would then need to protect the scavengers within the area indicated with a yellow circle on your minimap. The monsters will come from the southeast part of the yellow circle from your minimap, not only do you need to protect the scavengers, but also Albin himself. You will face four waves of monsters during this quest. The first two waves will have three Ghouls each, the third wave will have two ghouls and a Rotfiend, and the fourth and final wave will consist of three ghouls again. The last wave can spawn even when you are still dealing with the third wave.
In the southern part of the yellow circle, there could be Bandits on horseback there if they have not been previously killed yet.
If Albin manages to survive after the encounter, go back and talk to him, he will reward you with 50 Crowns and 50 XP, then the quest will be completed. Depending on how many scavengers are left on the field, Albin may reward you an additional 50 Crowns making the maximum reward up to 100 Crowns.
If Albin dies, however, and at least one of the scavengers survives, the survivor will reward you with 20 Crowns and still earn 50 XP.
The quest will fail if Albin dies and all of his men are killed, but you will still receive 15 Crowns afterward. Take note that informing the shade merchant that Albin died will fail the Fake Papers quest.
