Prerequisite Destination: Skellige
Next Quest None

Following the Thread is a Secondary Quest in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. Secondary Quests are optional Quests not required to finish the game. Some of these quests may have a bearing on certain Main Quests or may be a consequence of another Quest.

Following the Thread can be obtained by collecting the notice off of the Notice Board at Hierarch Square in Novigrad. This quest has Geralt track down an elusive Ekimmara and help and old friend in the process.

While wallowing in the Bits, Novigrad's worst and most notorious slum, the witcher took a contract on a monster committing horrendous murders under the cover of darkness. At the time, he never suspected that a story starting in the gutter would end in a luxurious manor.

Walkthrough for The Witcher 3 Following the Thread

Once you've started the quest, talk to the supervisor and he'll reveal that the beast is already being hunted down by a "brave fool" that turned up, he'll also inform you of the location of the incident. Examine the crime scene, then follow the track of claw marks, it'll eventually lead you to the river. You will have to swim to the other side to follow up on the tracks. Continue following the tracks until it leads you to a building, enter it and you will find Lambert fighting an Ekimmara. After the fight, you'll have a conversation with Lambert. You have the option to choose to go with Lambert to talk to the supervisor, and you will be taken there immediately if you wish to go with him, then a cutscene will occur. You can also tell Lambert that you'll meet up with him there so you can loot the Ekimmara for an Ekimmara Hide.

Once you go to the supervisor, Lambert will start a fight where you'll have to kill three guards. After killing the guards, talk to Lambert. No matter what happens, Lambert will finish off the supervisor and ask you to join him at the Seven Cats. When you find him, Lambert will tell you that he's after an assassin named Jad Karadin, and wants to avenge Aiden, his witcher friend from school. He's from the school of the cat and says that Jad and his gang murdered Aiden.

When you talk to Vienne, she will tell you that she doesn't know where Jad Karadin is, but she will provide you with information regarding the two other members named Selyse and Hammond. A fight may occur depending on the conversation dialogue you choose at the end. If you choose the option " Do what you think is right." Vienne will call for help, and the conversation ends, then you will enter combat with Vienne and three other Elves. If you choose the option "Don't kill her." Vienne will insult you but no fight will break out. Whatever happens, Lambert will suggest you split up. You will now have to look for Hammond in Faroe. Before you look for Hammond, you can speak to Crach to know more about Hammond if you wish.

Now head to Faroe and speak to the pirates at the entrance of Trottheim. If you've already completed the quest Flesh for Sale, do not fast-travel to Trottheim, or else you will be transported to the middle of the village and the conversation with the pirates will not trigger anymore. Hammond can be found at a shrine near the eastern point of the island, but the marker on your map may be wrong if you've already completed Flesh for Sale. After interacting with Hammon, he and his men will start to attack you. Kill all of them and search his body, you can loot a letter from Jad Karadin.

You can then return to Crach if you've previously talked to him, you will receive 50 XP and 200 Crowns.

Head to Novigrad and meet up with Lambert at The Nowhere Inn. He will tell you that Karadin is now living as a successful merchant and trader in Novigrad under a different name. You and Lambert will decide to visit Karadin at his home, and upon approaching his residence, guards will approach you and take you straight to Karadin. It will be revealed that he's now a retired witcher. You have a short conversation with Karadin where he reveals that his band was forced to kill Aiden when Aiden attacked them. You will have the option to spare him or help Lambert kill him. If you choose to spare Karadin, Lambert will be angry with you, but there will be no serious implications, and will not affect your future quests in any way. Regardless of your choice, the two of you will go your separate ways.

If you've already started the quest Gwent: Old Pals and haven't met Lambert yet as part of the main storyline, you have the chance to challenge him to a Gwent battle. You can talk to him before he walks away.
