Type Secondary Quest
Location Novigrad
Suggested Level 24
Prerequisite None
Next Quest None

Of Swords and Dumplings is a Secondary Quest in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. Secondary Quests are optional Quests not required to finish the game. Some of these quests may have a bearing on certain Main Quests or may be a consequence of another Quest.

Of Swords and Dumplings can be obtained by asking several blacksmiths about making master swords or by speaking to Hattori in his house north-west of the Glory Gate in Novigrad. Geralt offers to help Hattori with his material supply issue in exchange for some mastercrafted swords.

A witcher without a blade is like a potter without hands, and thus they are always on the lookout for skilled smiths to reforge or repair their deadly limbs. One day Geralt encountered a certain Hattori, a former master swordsmith who had transitioned into the premade edibles trade. He decided to convince the man to give up this dough business and return to his former practice. Little did he know this would be the start of a strange and toilsome adventure involving Skelligers, dumplings, shady ore dealers and, I kid you not, crafting supplies.

Walkthrough for The Witcher 3 Of Swords and Dumplings

Once you've spoken to Hattori, agree to help him in negotiating with the King of Beggars' men to get supplies. He will then ask you to meet him at the docks around dusk.

Go to the spot at the docks and once you see him, approach him. If you get close enough, he'll approach you and ask if you're ready. Once you're ready, follow him to the meeting place where Tinboy is waiting. Hattori will tell you that you need Tinboy's help more than he needs yours. Tinboy will declare no negotiations but you will have a few options here:

  • Negotiate. This will allow you to negotiate down to 25%.
  • Tell him he's crazy. This will allow you to negotiate down to 25% as well.
  • Let's get this over with. The deal will remain at 50%.

The best approach for this would be to choose either of the first two options and then refuse to agree to a deal with any of the following options. Choose "no deal." when you reach the time reaction where Tinboy proceeds to leave, he will come back agreeing to 25% and a discount at the store. But just as you agree, Cleaver's men will show up. Kill all of them and follow Hattori through the alleys to another location and a cutscene will occur.

Tinboy will suggest getting protection until a truce is called and regardless of what you choose, you will have to find your own protection for Hattori until a deal is made between the gang leaders. Hattori then panics and runs off. You will then earn 25 XP and 20 Crowns for this. Now talk to Hattori and convince him to keep trying.

Go back to Hattori's house and knock on the door, he'll refuse to open at first but will eventually ask you to find him a bodyguard. He'll suggest Sukrus, a Skelliger pirate. He asks that you should try convincing him to forget about the money Hattori owes him and help him out.

Now head over to The Golden Sturgeon, you'll find Sukrus in a fistfight with a merchant just outside of The Golden Sturgeon to the east. Intervene the fight, and regardless of whether you beat him or you lose, you'll both end up having a drink afterward where he'll ask a favor for a favor. He'll ask you to deal with his brother-in-law by either convincing him to pay his debts or smashing the Skellige mead barrels.

Both options are at the same place on a ship off the main dock in Novigrad. The only way to convince the merchant is to use Axii which will require Delusion level 2, you will earn 35 XP for this. If you don't have the requirements, you will have no other choice but to destroy the mead. You can use Aard to destroy the pile of barrels on each side of the ship. As soon as you destroy the barrels, the men on the ship will turn hostile, defeat them then run off and talk to Sukrus.

Regardless of how you dealt with the situation, Sukrus will be happy and will be glad to help and act as a bodyguard for Hattori. You will then earn 10 XP and 10 Crowns.

Now go back to Hattori and talk to him, he will thank you for getting him protection. He then suggests "borrowing" some of van Hoorn's supplies. Now go outside and talk to Sukrus, he'll ask you to meet him after dark at the warehouse near The Golden Sturgeon.

6pm is the earliest time you can meet him, he'll then tell you the plan, you will need to deal with the lone guard and mark the crates. As you approach you will eventually run into the brother-in-law again, thinking you're following him to antagonize him. The dwarf will then recognize you from an old friend, Yarpen, and will let you through the door by choosing one of the options:

  • Pay 200 Crowns. You will earn 20 XP for this.
  • Use Axii which requires Delusion level 3. You will earn 40 XP for this.
  • Just head straight in. This will only work if you used an imported save file and if you sided with Iorveth in The Witcher 2.

Now interact with the door to unlock it, then go inside and use your witcher senses to locate and mark the three crates. After that, head outside and talk to Sukrus, you will then find several bandits and Ernst van Hoorn himself outside with the brother-in-law. When van Hoorn begins to threaten Sukrus, the brother-in-law decides to side with you, and now you will have to face van Hoorn and the bandits.

It is important that during this fight, you do not stray too far away from the area, otherwise the quest will fail and there will be no other way for Hattori to craft master swords for you. Once you've taken care of them, return to Hattori and explain with van Hoorn gone, Cleaver lost interest in swordsmiths. Now Hattori can work in peace, and he will be available as a master swordsmith.

He will then tell you to come back later for your reward. You can return to him after 6 hours and he'll have the reward ready, the Blade from the Bits, after accepting it, the quest will end.

I talked to the elf at the docks but was on my way to another guest so told him I wasn't ready to meet with the thugs. Now he wont show up at any time of the day...

      • You can negotiate down to 25%. Make your initial offer (conv 1) and you'll say 25. They'll say 35 is as low as they go and then walk away. You'll get a convo. timer. Select option 1 (Fine, no deal.) and they'll agree to 25%. You get ambushed by "Cleaver's boys" regardless.
