Crossbows in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are small, one-handed Ranged Weapons that Geralt can use to deal damage to opponents from a distance. Crossbows are particularly effective in grounding Monsters that take flight as well as taking down opponents that dwell in water. Crossbows have their own dedicated slot and require Bolts to fire. They can be loaded with different types of Bolts, some with specialized effects and properties that make them more effective in ranged combat. Crossbows can be obtained through various means including random drops from defeated opponents, looted from treasure chests, awarded for completing Quests and objectives and some can be crafted by a Blacksmith with the appropriate diagram and materials.

Crossbow Mechanics & Tips

  • Crossbows can either be quickfired or manually aimed to hit specific parts of an opponent, allowing Geralt to deal precision damage by targeting parts such as the heads of humans. Geralt must load another bolt after every shot (or two shots with the Trick Shot skill), which can leave him vulnerable to attacks.
  • Crossbows are particularly useful in grounding flying enemies such as Griffins so Geralt can close in with sword strikes.
  • Bolts have their own dedicated slot in the inventory and can be switched out in the menu or within the weapon wheel.
  • Geralt will gain access to standard Bolts during the quest Lilac and Gooseberries. These bolts are infinite in amount and are the default bolt equipped when no other bolts are available.
  • More specialized Bolts are also available but in limited amounts. These bolts have special properties such as dealing piercing damage, exploding on impact or splitting into multiple projectiles upon firing. These types of bolts have varying degrees of effectiveness depending on the situation.
  • Crossbows are the only weapons that can be used underwater but they are incredibly effective at taking out opponents. While underwater, Crossbows cannot fire specialized bolts. However, the game automatically loads a special underwater variant of the default infinite bolts which deal twice the base damge and 100 times the silver damage, making them lethal in just 1 to 2 shots in most cases.
  • Crossbows cannot be upgraded with Runestones.
  • Crossbows that belong to Witcher Gear sets do not contribute towards the 3/6-piece Set Bonuses.
