The Volunteer | The Witcher 3 Wiki

The Volunteer is a Secondary Quest in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. Secondary Quests are optional Quests not required to finish the game. Some of these quests may have a bearing on certain Main Quests or may be a consequence of another Quest.

The Volunteer can be obtained by either collecting the notice from the Notice Board in Oxenfurt or approaching Trollololo, a Rock Troll marked with a yellow exclamation mark just northeast of the White Eagle Fort signpost in Velen. Geralt has to decide whether this Redanian Army volunteer is a danger to the locals. 

While meandering through the sunny but war-damaged lands near Oxenfurt, Geralt's sensitive ears picked up a very strange sound - something between off-key singing and the bellowing of a stuck pig. Geralt would be a poor excuse for a witcher if he did not investigate such a matter.

The Witcher 3 The Volunteer Objectives

• Look around the area.

If Geralt chooses to help Trollololo:

• Find the paint the troll needs.
• Deliver the paint to the troll.

If Geralt decides Trollololo is too dangerous:

• Kill the troll.

Walkthrough for The Witcher 3 The Volunteer

Once you've reached the singing troll named Trollololo, interact with him, and you will learn that he sees himself as a Redanian soldier now. He was asked to guard some boats that the soldiers took from the peasants in the area. Then the peasants arrived on the scene wanting to take their boats back. The soldiers and peasants fought each other over the boats. Trollololo tried to help the soldiers but because of his brute strength, he accidentally killed everyone, both the peasants' and soldiers' groups. Trollololo then said he does not want to let the human bodies go to waste, so he decided to cook and eat the bodies. You will then have two choices here:

• Kill him.
• Let it slide.

If you chose the former, you will gain 50 XP and you can also loot some items off from his body, there's also a chance for you to loot a Cave Troll Liver.

If you chose the latter, he will ask you to retrieve some paint. You can buy some from the merchant located in Oxenfurt if you don't have one already. Interact with Trollololo again once you have the paint, he will realize he doesn't know how to paint the Redanian coat of arms and will ask you to do it. You can do what he asked or choose to tell him that he's better off painting it himself. Regardless of your choice, you will receive 50 XP, a number of hides, and obtain the Gven'nel and Axeman's Gauntlets diagram.
